Potty Training...

Does anyone have any advice for potty training? How do you teach child to hold it in while they run to the potty? I started out letting Donovan run around naked and he had a few accidents (just wet ones, thank goodness), then I let him wear underwear and he had more wet accidents. I caved and bought some pull-ups yesterday and he's really excited to wear them. He'll sit on the potty, but won't go and 20 minutes later, he has an accident. I'm not frustrated yet, I'm trying to be cool and let him know that accidents happen, but he doesn't seem to care when he has an accident. Does that mean he's not ready? He loves sitting on the potty and wants to use his sticker chart, I just can't seem to get him on the potty at the right time! Help!

In other news, the computer is being looked at right now, I'm not sure how long it's going to take so I don't know when you'll get more pictures. I am currently using a laptop from the college, but Brad ordered a new adapter for our laptop so I can upload pictures again sometime soon...hopefully.

Donovan has been really funny lately. His little personality is showing more and more everyday. The things he says always crack us up, he can be such a nut. He loves to watch me play our new Wii Fit. I have been doing the Yoga every morning (I've already lost 3 lbs and I feel awesome), and he loves to watch and does some of the poses with me. He has to be in the middle of everything! He is just like Bradley, always the center of attention, whether he tries to be or not. He can be a bit of a stinker when Addi is over here. I remember Mason getting mad when Donovan would touch him, and Donovan does the same thing to Addi. He gets so annoyed if she touches him, but when he's in the mood he'll give her hugs and kisses. He has done awesome in his big boy bed! All we have to do is tell him to stay in his bed and crack the door so he can hear us and he goes right to sleep. The only downside is, he wakes up at 6:00 every morning and climbs in bed with us for a few minutes before he tells me he wants breakfast. I guess it's good that he gets us up early, I have extra time in the morning to get in a workout. He's been more interested in babies lately and I ask him if he wants a brother or sister and he says, "Bister". I guess that means he wants both...we'll see. And no, I'm not pregnant, you may be waiting a while before you get that kind of news. We haven't spent much time outside, it's been either freezing cold, or really wet. It snowed again last night, boo. I'm so sick of snow. It's going to take all spring for all the snow to melt!! I guess I can't complain, we've been in double digits the last few weeks. It's much warmer than it was a month ago.

Brad is going out of town again, he was in Florida last weekend and will be in Utah until Sunday. Donovan and I get really bored without him, especially when there's nothing to do outside! We don't even want to go to the zoo. We've spent a lot of time at the library, the mall, and Target. I read The Hunger Games on Saturday. It's a little morbid, but I liked it. I'm on a waiting list to get the second book. Does anyone have any other book suggestions? I like having a book to read after Donovan goes to bed when Brad is out of town.

Anyway, sorry this is so boring, I have a lot of pictures in my camera waiting to be uploaded!!!

I just read Catching Fire. It was good. A lot less death and destruction. I have These Is My Words to read. I've heard from many people that it's great. I also like everything I've read by Margaret Atwood. I look forward to seeing D-Van's pictures and to learning the secrets of potty training. Colin just tells me no when i ask him if he wants to use the potty.

Good luck with the potty training thing. The girls trained very easily but it took me asking them literally every 20 min to go. The first 2 days they went bottomless then when I felt like they were getting the concept I put them in underwear. I stayed away from the pullups except for at night and nap time because I felt like they would just treat them like a diaper. With the underwear they can feel that they are wet and gross and don't want to stay in them so that can be a teaching tool too.

Oh - I love the Hunger Games. Catching Fire is awesome...now I'm waiting anxiously for the third to come out. I just finished Gone and I liked it - it's a simple read but entertaining. But don't read the second book in the Gone series, Hunger. It was kind of dark. Not a fan. Have you read The Kite Runner or A Thousand Splendid Suns? Good good books.

Good luck with potty training - sounds fun ;)

Take your time and let him go at his pace. If you rush him or make him feel he's being forced he'll do the opposite of what you want.
No helpful suggestions for what to read. Everyone has different tastes at different times. You might enjoy the original Dune series by Frank Herbert. His son teamed up with another writer to expand it all, and it's very entertaining, but not quite the same impact as the originals.

yeah, i just read those 2 books too. i agree. a little morbid, but good. very entertaining. i also started the percy jackson and the olympians series. they are making the first book, the lightning thief into a movie that comes out next month. its definitely geared towards more of a children/ young adult audience, but it's funny and clever. i liked it a lot!

I'm not a pull-up fan at all. I think they have to feel uncomfortable- different than a wet diaper. I'd start slower getting him to go just before bath, nap etc so he gets the idea of going on the potty then expand it to daytime. If the weather is so awful it might be the best time to go ahead with potty training cuz he's not outside so much. I'm glad to have Bradley visit- too bad you guys couldn't come too.

I can't help you with the potty training thing. But my mom used marshmallows as a reward for my brother.

Good work on the yoga thing. I've been exercising 5 days a week for the past month and it really helps my mood if nothing else. Sarah whines the whole time, but oh well, she whines no matter what I do.

take your time. I just showed my kids the concept and over a couple months they were potty trained, but it was like one day they said they had to go and that was it. Wait until summer then he can pee on a tree outside. Worked for Drew, but he was on a farm.
